FOOTBALL - Reds unbeaten in four after fine Rushden win

REDDITCH United remained unbeaten on the road in the league this season with a 2-0 win at AFC Rushden and Diamonds.

The Reds were on top throughout and finally made the breakthrough courtesy of second-half goals from Bernard Mensah and Danny King at Hayden Road.

And the result means Redditch sit fourth in the Southern League Premier Central table.

Rushden thought they had taken the lead when the ball was headed in at a corner only for the referee to award a free-kick to Redditch for a foul in the congested penalty area.

Redditch responded when Reece Flanagan fired over the crossbar before the same player forced Rushden goalkeeper Dean Snedker into a fine save from a free-kick from 25-yards out.

And Flanagan was then denied by the left-hand post after his free-kick beat Snedker before Max Sheaf fired a low effort narrowly wide and King flashed a shot past the post.

The Reds were still on top and continued to push for an opener at the start of the second period as Sheaf’s header looped onto the top of the crossbar.

Matt Clarke’s side finally opened the scoring on 68 minutes when Mensah reacted quickest to steal the ball off a defender on the edge of the Rushden penalty area and drove an effort back across goal into the bottom right corner.

And the visitors almost doubled their lead when King beat his man and fired an effort towards the near post that was parried away by Snedker.

However, King was not to be denied and put the game to bed on 85 minutes when he tapped home into an empty net after he beat a defender and Snedker to Sheaf’s ball over the top.

Redditch are next in action at home to Barwell on Saturday, October 22 with kick-off at 3pm at the Trico Stadium.
