FOOTBALL - Second-half goals help Reds past 10-man Bedford

REDDITCH United scored three second-half goals to beat 10-man Bedford Town and end their three-game winless run in the league.

Bernard Mensah, Ryan Wollacott and Max Sheaf all struck in the second period whilst Bedford’s Sam Dreyer was sent off late on at the Trico Stadium.

The result means Redditch sit seventh in the Southern League Premier Central table having secured their first win of the New Year.

Matt Clarke’s side went close to an opener when Wollacott headed against the underside of the bar and Mensah’s follow up was cleared off the line.

And Mensah then shot inches past the post moments before the break after his initial goalbound effort was blocked.

However, Redditch finally made the breakthrough in the second half on 68 minutes when Mensah prodded the ball home into the bottom left corner from Sheaf’s pass.

And the Reds doubled their lead four minutes later when Wollacott headed home Sheaf’s free-kick at the back post.

The home side sealed the points on 85 minutes when Sheaf smashed the ball home after Mensah’s initial strike was blocked.

And Bedford were reduced to 10-men for the final few minutes after defender Dreyer was sent off for a poor challenge on Mensah.

Redditch are next in action at home to League One side Burton Albion on Monday, January 16 in the Birmingham Senior Cup with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Trico Stadium.
