FOOTBALL - Studley FC remain top after narrow Abingdon victory

STUDLEY FC remain top of the Hellenic League Division One table after battling to a 2-1 win against relegation threatened Abingdon United.

Dan Carter scored the winning goal in the second-half after Ben Birch had fired Studley into the lead only for Connor Ferguson to equalise for the visitors.

The result means Studley remain above Worcester Raiders on goal difference and have a game in-hand on their closest rivals.

And Studley took the lead on 12 minutes when Birch slotted home from six-yards out after a deep corner was headed back into the danger zone by Ben Welsh.

The home side could have extended their lead but were kept at bay by a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping from Abingdon’s Cameron Midwinter.

And Abingdon made Studley pay for those missed chances when Ferguson scored a fine individual goal, cutting inside of his man and finding the top corner, on the stroke of half-time to send the teams into the break level.

Studley were once again wasteful in front of goal in the second period before Carter found the bottom corner on 65 minutes following good work from Mark Magee.

Abingdon almost found an equaliser when Nat Robinson hit the bar with a free-kick 18-yards from goal but Studley held on to claim their seventh successive win in the league.

Studley are next in action away at Cheltenham Saracens on Saturday, January 29 with kick-off at 3pm at Petersfield Park.
