Kingfishers are sniffing promotion

Redditch Editorial 1st Mar, 2017 Updated: 1st Mar, 2017   0

REDDITCH boosted their West Midlands Division One promotion hopes with a crucial 4-0 home victory over fellow challengers Wolverhampton on Saturday.

The win cemented second spot for the Kingfishers, who lead third placed Old Wulfrunians on goal difference with two matches remaining, the first of which is Saturday’s trip to Evesham & Badsey.

Goals from Jacob Beard, Harry Capewell, Peter Dawson and man of the match James Makin put the Black Country side to the sword.

The result was just reward for a Redditch side who pushed leaders West Bromwich all the way the previous weekend in slipping to a 2-0 away loss through two short corners.

Another notable performance since Christmas was an 11-0 thumping of visitors Yardley in mid-February and Redditch will be confident of finishing the job as their trip to Evesham & Badsey is followed by a home game against basement boys Newtown.

Old Wulfs, whose goal difference is two inferior to Redditch, face a tough finale as they host West Bromwich before visiting Pershore.

REDDITCH 2nds have already secured promotion from West Midlands Division Two 2nd Team League and know a draw against title rivals and visitors Bromsgrove on Saturday will be enough to clinch the title.

Recent results show Redditch’s dominance as they have won every game since Christmas and are still unbeaten this season.

On Saturday Redditch won 2-1 at Old Wulfrunians, which followed a 14-0 home victory over Wednesbury.

THE MEN’S 3rd team are fourth in West Midlands Division One 3rd Team League following Saturday’s 9-1 win at home to Old Wulfrunians.

The midfield were influential in achieving victory as goals came from Alex Beard (3), Josh Brown (2), George Haslam (2), Wayne Beard and Ben Cattell.

With four games left, including playing the top two, Redditch still have an outside chance of securing a top two finish and promotion.

REDDITCH 4ths, launched at the start of this season to facilitate the club’s growing membership, have enjoyed a successful first season under the guidance of captain Josh Checkley.

Despite suffering a 5-0 defeat at Khalsa on Saturday, the team sit sixth in what is a very close Central League South West Two table with four matches remaining.

UNFORTUNATELY the ladies have not seen as much success this season and currently sit bottom of Worcestershire League Division One with a tough run-in awaiting.

However, a more positive note is the fact the club has been able to field a ladies’ 2nd XI this season on several occasions, giving new and younger players the chance to play competitive fixtures.

Next season Redditch will be entering the 2nd team into a league to ensure this continued development.

Two junior Redditch teams recently played in a Worcestershire tournament for the first time in a number of years.

With the junior section currently boasting very high numbers with 40-50 children training every Wednesday (6-7.30pm), Redditch were able to field both an U10 and U12 team.
