MARTIAL artists at Redditch-based karate academy Furi Sutairu Shotokan (FSK) competed in the World Karate and Martial Arts Championships recently – securing podium finishes in two of the categories.

Sensei Dave Treadwell 5th Dan and student David Andrews 3rd Kyu took part in a huge online traditional Karate-Do Okinawa event that included more than 500 competitors.

And Sensei Treadwell secured first place in the Weapon Kata category whilst Andrews placed first in the Shadow Kumite category.

Entrants from all over the world battled it out by submitting videos in a range of categories to be scored by a panel of martial art experts from across the globe.

The panel included judges from Japan, South Africa, India, Greece, Malaysia, Germany and Bangladesh.

Sensei Treadwell – of FSK Redditch – said: “It’s a huge honor to not only compete with great athletes from around the globe but also to be judged by these great practitioners who have a wealth of knowledge.”

FSK are hosting a national martial arts event at Arrow Vale RSA Academy in Redditch next month which is open to all martial artists – to be led by Sensei Treadwell.

The academy is putting on the event to allow martial artists from all over the United Kingdom to showcase their skills – following a difficult 18 months for the sport amidst Covid restrictions.

Sensei Treadwell – who has trained in Shotokan Karate for over 37 years – wants the event to bring martial artists together in the Midlands.

Clubs from all over the country are set to take part with karate, taekwondo, kickboxing and grapplers all coming together to show their skills in various categories including Kata/Forms, weapons and sparring.

The event takes place on Sunday, November 21 at Arrow Vale RSA Academy in Redditch.
