New Alcester coach enjoys winning start

Redditch Editorial 11th Aug, 2018   0

NEW coach Chris Johnston enjoyed a winning start with Alcester chalking up a 26-21 win at Handsworth in their first pre-season game.

With Johnston having taken over after Keith Beech stepped down, last Saturday’s squad included a few new faces debuting in an Alcester shirt including father and son Martin and Will Nadin who graced the pitch together for the first time.

Martin, 57, said: “We won but that was incidental to sharing the experience together.”

The game was played in quarters to allow rolling on-and-off subs and much-needed rest breaks in the hot weather.

The score line was back and forth throughout the game until Alcester secured the victory in the final quarter.

The home side scored first but the first quarter finished 7-12 to Alcester after tries from Oscar Holland and Chris Howell and a successful conversion from Max Biltcliffe.

Scott McGee made his first appearance for the red and blacks for the first time in a while but had lost little of his renowned pace and he was later held up over the line by the Handsworth defence.

Despite this Handsworth finished the second quarter in front after a converted try.

Both teams scored in the third quarter with Josh O’Connor adding to the scoreboard for Alcester but Handsworth kept their lead heading in to the final section of the game.

Last season’s top try scorer and this year’s vice-captain Jack Green secured the win for the visitors with the last try of the game and after a change of kicker Howell slotted over the final points with a conversion.

Alcester’s next pre-season friendly is against Droitwich away on August 18 but in the meantime training continues every Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm.
