ALTHOUGH the season is approaching its end, Alcester Bowling Club are still putting in notable performances.

In Division Three of the Northfield League, they entertained Central Edgbaston A and recorded an 11-shot win to pick up six points to the visitors’ four.

Brian Lees led the way for Alcester with a superb 21-3 success, backed up by John Alderson (21-10), John Slater (21-13) and Ken Harvey (21-17).

The B team in Division Seven of the S&W Birmingham Over 60s league had a massive 66-shot home win against Olton Tavern B to pick up nine points against the visitors’ one.

The highlight for Alcester was the club’s third 21-0 card of the season, this time from Trish Barry. Other excellent results came from Ken Craddock (21-5), David Hodgson (21-6), Geoff Spiers (21-7) and Jean Sherrington (21-15).

In a rearranged Division One match in the Heart of England League’s over 60s section, Alcester A slumped to a home defeat against leaders Moseley Cricket Club A.

Only Ken Craddock (21-11) and Ken Harvey (21-16) could produce winning cards as the team went down by 13 shots, conceding 14 points whilst gaining just two.

Worse was to follow four days later when they visited Green Man A for the scheduled match of the week.

Only a single winning card from David Whittington (21-16) came Alcester’s way as they fell to a 41-shot defeat. This 15-1 result makes it all but impossible to avoid relegation in the last two matches of the season.

In Division Five the B team lifted the gloom a little as they clinched promotion with a 14-shot home win against Kings Norton B.

Alcester’s four winning cards came from David Hodgson (excellent at 21-9), Geoff Spiers (21-12), Carole Slater (21-16) and Trish Barry (21-20) and this 14-2 success leaves two more matches in which the team can grab top spot in the table.
