Redditch claim key victory in the battle for promotion

Redditch Editorial 10th Nov, 2016   0

REDDITCH ended West Bromwich’s 100 per cent record with a 2-1 home win on Saturday and in doing so maintained their own to move three points clear at the top of West Midlands Division One.

The Black Country side went into the clash top of the table on goal difference but both they and Wolverhampton now trail the Kingfishers by three points, with the leaders having won all six of their games.

Redditch started the game with high pressure and intensity and created some early chances, but West Brom rallied and had openings of their own.

Adrian Young, Ben Haresign and Will Moss were solid at the back for the hosts and this base was built on in midfield by Andy Billingham and Chris Thomas, eventually leading to Jacob Beard putting the Kingfishers 1-0 up before the break.

The visitors hit back strongly in the second half and deservedly levelled, but Redditch were not to be denied and Beard netted the winner in the closing stages.

As the clock ran down, West Brom had numerous short corners to draw level again but key defensive efforts and saves from Joe Cardy ensured the hosts prevailed.

Another key game awaits Redditch on Saturday when they travel to third placed Wolverhampton.
