Redditch have promotion in their sights

Redditch Editorial 22nd Dec, 2016   0

REDDITCH Hockey Club are sitting pretty at the top of West Midlands Division One at the halfway point of the season.

The Kingfishers have won eight and lost one of their nine matches and are above second placed West Bromwich on goal difference and third placed Wolverhampton by three points.

Redditch have dropped points on just one occasion – the 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton on November 12 when the visitors spurned several good chances.

Since then, 2016 has ended in style with a 5-0 home victory over Evesham & Badsey being followed by a 12-1 thrashing of Newtown in Mid-Wales.

Harry Capewell currently tops the goalscoring charts for Redditch with ten, followed by Jacob Beard and James Makin with six apiece.

Three clean sheets have also helped ensure Redditch have the joint best defensive record in the league with Wolverhampton.

Redditch 2nds also sit top of the pile, unbeaten in 2nd Team League West Midlands Division Two having won six and drawn one of their seven games.

At the halfway point of the campaign, Redditch have a four-point advantage over second placed Bromsgrove, with whom they drew 2-2 away from home in the penultimate game of 2016.

Then followed an 8-0 home thumping of Kings Heath. The Kingfishers’ Dan Waite (ten) and Rich Sellors (seven) are the league’s leading scorers.

Redditch 3rds are also enjoying a successful season having won seven and lost three of their ten matches in 3rd Team League West Midlands Division One.

They sit third in the table behind leaders Old Wulfrunians and second placed Bromsgrove by four and two points respectively.

Highlights have included a 15-0 home demolition of Leamington, 2-0 home success against Stone and a 2-1 triumph at Market Drayton in the final match of the year.

Club coach Wayne Beard, who also captains this team, has seen the youngsters in the side begin to prove themselves with Ethan Reeves (ten) and Josh Brown (six) both featuring in the leading goalscorers list.

The newly-formed Redditch 4ths have hit the ground running in Central League South West Division Two with some brilliant performances under new captain, 19-year-old Josh Checkley.

Redditch sit third after securing six victories from ten games in the first half of the season.

The ladies’ first team are having a tougher time of things and are bottom of Worcestershire League Division One with one win to their name.

Meanwhile, after the success of the club’s junior training sessions and summer ‘Back to Hockey’ programme, Redditch have been fielding a ladies’ 2nd XI who have played regular fixtures including the last competitive game before Christmas when they faced Stratford.

It is great for the youngsters to enjoy pitch time and gain experience as they look to build for the future.

Junior training sessions resume on Wednesday, January 4 for all abilities aged six to 16 between 6-7.30pm at Redditch Hockey Club, Bromsgrove Road.
