ALCESTER RFC moved back up to second in the table with a hard-fought 27-20 victory against Leamington in the club’s final home game of the season.

Tries from Josh O’Connor, who crossed twice, Lewis Wright, Ed Denby and Dwayne Cruickshank helped Alcester to a third successive victory at Kings Coughton.

And the result means Alcester sit second in the Counties 1 Midlands West (South) table, five points above Camp Hill in third but having played a game more.

The game took place in front of Alcester chairman Nick O’Connor and more than 70 guests for his annual lunch.

Alcester outscored their opponents three tries to two in the first half as O’Connor, Wright and Denby all crossed while Ed Gough kicked a single conversion.

However, the home side played much of the second half with 14-men after Nigel Burrows received a red card for retaliation.

Despite playing with a man less, Cruickshank crossed for the home side’s bonus point try before O’Connor powered over for his second try of the game soon after.

Leamington crossed for two late tries and secured a bonus point with the final play of the match.

Alcester are next in action against Old Laurentians in the Warwickshire Shield on Saturday, April 4 with kick-off at 3pm at Fenley Field.
