RUGBY UNION - Alcester beaten in pre-season friendly ahead of league opener

ALCESTER RFC suffered a comprehensive 36-7 defeat against Bromsgrove’s 2nd XV in a pre-season friendly.

Despite Alcester taking an early lead, Bromsgrove were quick to respond and continued to dominate the final three quarters of the match.

Alcester held strong for the first 15 minutes, as they managed to keep the game scoreless, before the opposition went on the attack.

However, Mark Burrell chip kicked and raced ahead, beating the defence to the ball, before diving over the line to hand Alcester the lead with Tom Burgess adding the extras.

The friendly game was split into quarters with rolling subs and frequent water breaks helping both teams make the most of training preparations for the upcoming league season.

Alcester finished the first quarter ahead, but Bromsgrove scored twice before half time to take a 10-7 lead.

Straight after the break Bromsgrove added their third try and their first successful conversion of the game.

Alcester started to suffer with several niggling injuries as Bromsgrove continued their domination running in another three tries before the final whistle.

This was Alcester’s second friendly defeat in two weeks after they were narrowly beaten 28-24 at home by Harborbe the previous week.

However, Alcester can take plenty of positives from the two games ahead of the competitive season, as the club utilises their new in-game camera to re-watch games for improvement in training.

Alcester’s Counties 2 Midlands West (South) campaign gets underway next weekend with a trip to Tenbury, who Alcester narrowly beat in the same fixture last season.
