RUGBY UNION - Redditch beaten at Bishops Castle

REDDITCH RFC failed to back up last weekend’s victory as the Kingfishers slipped to a 28-14 defeat away at Bishops Castle and Onny Valley.

Joe Looker and Craig Martin scored either side of half time for Redditch who were on the wrong side of the key decisions at Love Lane.

The result means Redditch sit 10th in the Counties 4 Midlands West (South) table.

Both teams looked to impose themselves in the early exchanges before Mills made good ground from a penalty and Looker barged his way over after some slick handling from Will Spires who added the extras.

Bishops Castle responded with a converted try of their own after they eventually broke through a strong Redditch defence.

And the home then added two penalties to their total before the break to leave Redditch six points behind at half time.

Redditch had plenty of possession in the second half but were unable to turn their dominance into points as they were left frustrated by a solid home defence.

Despite promising breaks from Matt Allen, Michael Adams and Martin, Redditch were unable to support the ball carrier with ground lost at the ruck.

And Martin was then shown a yellow card as Redditch dug deep to prevent their opponents from capitalising on the man advantage.

However, after an error-strewn period from both teams, the home side eventually utlisied an overlap on the left wing to score an unconverted try in the corner.

Redditch hit back almost immediately and used the middle of the pitch well before Martin atoned for his yellow card with a try underneath the posts which was converted by Spires to close the gap to four points.

Bishops Castle replied with a try of their own within a minute as Redditch were punished for a lack of concentration before a late penalty completed the scoring.

Redditch are next in action at home to Worcester II on Saturday, October 29 with kick-off at 3pm at Bromsgrove Road.
