REDDITCH RFC geared up for the start of the new season with a friendly defeat against local rivals Alcester.

Led by new coach Tom Saddington, the Kingfishers suffered a 29-12 against Alcester’s second side with neither team at full strength.

Redditch scored the game’s first try courtesy of Rory Allen only for Alcester to respond with three tries of their own.

The Kingfishers kept themselves in the contest when Harry Irvine finished off a flowing move and Archie Beddard kicked the extras.

However, Alcester struck twice more to retain the Fireman’s Cup trophy with the fixture played for the first time in a few years.

Redditch begin the league season with a home game against Tenbury on Saturday, September 6 with kick-off at 3pm at Bromsgrove Road.
