RUGBY UNION - Redditch beaten by final kick at Keresley

REDDITCH RFC suffered an agonising 15-13 defeat away at Keresley who clinched victory with the final kick of the game in a low-scoring affair.

The Kingfishers were on course for victory after tries from Phil Lane and Will Spires before the latter also kicked a penalty only for Keresley to snatch victory at the death.

And the result means Redditch remain bottom of the Counties 4 Midlands West (South) table.

Redditch hoped to build on last week’s victory against Five Ways Old Edwardians and made a bright start as Lane scored the game’s first try when he capitalised on a break from Matt Allen.

However, the home side responded with a converted try only for Spires to send Redditch into the break with a three-point lead as he caught everyone off guard to score down the blindside.

A series of injuries prevented the second half from ever gaining any momentum before Keresley were awarded their second try despite the ball not being clearly grounded under a pile of bodies.

And Redditch then lost two players to the sin bin to compound their misery having defended valiantly all half.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Redditch remained solid and did not conceded a single point whilst two-men down before Spires kicked a penalty to hand the visitors a slender one-point lead.

However, there was still time for Keresley to be awarded a penalty of their own in a good position as the home side won the game with the last kick.

Redditch are next in action at home to Malvern II on Saturday, March 4 with kick-off at 3pm at Bromsgrove Road.
