RUGBY UNION - Redditch beaten by title-chasing Malvern

REDDITCH RFC suffered a 43-10 defeat away at title-chasing Malvern II as the Kingfishers scored their only try with the last play of the game.

The visitors touched down at the death as Clarke Parker crashed over the line while Will Heath added five points from the kicking tee at Spring Lane.

And the result means Redditch sit eighth in the Counties 4 Midlands West (South) table.

Malvern dominated the opening exchanges as the Kingfishers grew into the game before an outrageous dummy from the home fly-half opened up the pitch and allowed the hosts to score the game’s first try.

And Malvern ran in three further tries before the break to take the game away from Redditch as the home side’s quality told on several occasions.

Despite some top-draw tackling from Heath, Cal Razzak and Jon Beale, and a fine display from Tyler Monger on his first start for the senior team, the Kingfishers were unable to find a way back into the contest.

Malvern scored a try straight from the restart at the start of the second period before the home side scored two further tries out wide in the closing stages.

A penalty from Heath ensured the Kingfishers finally troubled the scoreboard before a dominant scrum saw Parker crash over and Heath convert with the last kick of the game.

Redditch are next in action away at Upton-on-Severn on Saturday, February 24 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Banwell Park.
