RUGBY UNION - Redditch beaten by Worcester on return to league action

REDDITCH RFC were beaten 29-15 by title-chasing Worcester II in their first league outing since early December.

Jon Beale and Joe Purvis crossed for tries in either half whilst Will Spires added five points from the kicking tee in a much-improved performance at Westons Fields.

The result means Redditch remain bottom of the Counties 4 Midlands West (South) table.

Redditch started well and surprised the home side with their aggressive and stubborn approach but were unable to turn Worcester mistakes and penalties into points.

Worcester eventually scored the game’s first try with a drive from a lineout before Spires responded with a penalty only for the home side to strike again from another lineout close to the Redditch line.

However, the visitors bounced back to score their first try through Beale who scooped up a loose ball in midfield and sprinted to the line with Spires’s conversion reducing the deficit to two points at the break.

Worcester showed their class at the start of the second period to score three tries in the space of 13 minutes and blow Redditch away.

The away side refused to give up and showed great character to score their second try as Purvis dotted down his maiden first team score following a huge drive by the forward pack.

Redditch are next in action away at Hereford II on Saturday, February 4 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Belvedere Lane.
