REDDITCH RFC finished the season with an excellent 42-27 bonus point win against Bishops Castle and Onny Valley to move off the bottom of the table.

The Kingfishers crossed for six tries courtesy of Harvey Habgood, Aaron Atkinson, Mike Allen, Craig Martin, Jon Beale and Mike Adams at Bromsgrove Road.

And the result means Redditch finish the season in ninth place in the Counties 4 Midlands West (South) table, four points above bottom side Evesham II.

Redditch kicked themselves into a six-point lead as Will Spires converted two penalties before a fumble from the visiting full back went unnoticed by the referee which allowed Bishops Valley to score the game’s opening try.

The home side responded when Habgood touched down the Kingfishers first try after good work by the pack before Atkinson sprinted in from 60-metres out to score under the posts after Matt Allen drew in the defenders with a trademark run from the restart.

However, Bishops Castle scored their second try just before half time to reduce the deficit to six points at the break only to be reduced to 14-men in the second period after a player was sent off for foul play.

And Redditch made the most of the man advantage to score their third try as Mike Allen dotted down following a series of drives and Spires converted before Bishops Castle found a gap to keep themselves in the game.

The Kingfishers finally sealed victory when Martin reacted quickest to Adams’ delicate chip kick and redirected the ball towards the posts before diving on it to score.

And Redditch’s dominant scrum set the platform for their next try as Spires fed Will Heath who in turn found Beale who scored underneath the posts with both tries converter by the former.

Redditch’s final try was scored by Adams either side of two scores from Bishops Castle.

The club’s second team have struggled for numbers all season but were able to put out a social side last weekend in defeat against a strong Stourbridge Grasshoppers side.

Redditch finish the domestic season with games in the North Midlands Vase away at Bredon Star on April 1 and at home to Pershore on April 15 with the group winners to progress.

And Redditch player Beale was selected to represent Worcester and Hereford against Shropshire in midweek.
