RUGBY UNION - Redditch make winning start to New Year in friendly

REDDITCH RFC made a winning start to the New Year as the Kingfishers beat Old Halesonians 3rds 19-5 in a friendly.

Original opponents Trinity Guild dropped out of the league system which meant Redditch were without a game until Old Halesonians stepped in to provide the Kingfishers with their first test of the New Year.

And the new coaching team helped Redditch rediscover their form, enthusiasm and teamwork having won just one of their 11 league fixtures this term.

Debutant Dave Roberts made an immediate impact when he ran through his opposite number at fly half and all the way to the try line before converting his own score.

Old Halesonians responded with a try of their own which was unconverted before Redditch scored their second of the game when Sid Allen dotted down after good work from Clarke Parker who stole the ball and Mitch Ferris who provided the assist.

And Roberts scored his second of the afternoon when a kick through gained momentum and Redditch won the resulting ruck as the tryscorer once again converted his own try.

No points were scored in the second period despite the best efforts of both teams as Redditch produced a determined defensive effort to keep the visitors at bay for the final 15 minutes.

Overall, Redditch’s support play was tighter whilst the tackling was positive and all attacking avenues were explored in a much more coherent display.

Redditch return to league action against Bishops Castle on Saturday, January 21 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Bromsgrove Road.
