REDDITCH RFC suffered a narrow 21-19 home defeat against Upton-on-Severn despite a valiant second half comeback.

The Kingfishers were 21 points behind at the break before Aaron Atkinson, Tom Lipscomb and Archie Beddard all crossed for tries with Will Spires kicking two conversions at Bromsgrove Road.

And the result means Redditch sit sixth in the Counties 4 Midlands West (South) table.

Upton scored the game’s first try out wide and impressively converted after Redditch’s attempted clearance kick failed to find touch.

And the visitors struck again after a Redditch error allowed Upton to create an overlap and score a second converted try out wide.

Upton took the game out of Redditch’s reach with a third try under the posts before the break with the Kingfishers trailing by 21 points at the interval.

And after withstanding some early Upton pressure in the second period, Redditch finally troubled the scoreboard when Atkinson dotted down and Spires converted after a long kick down the pitch from Matt Allen.

The Kingfishers scored their second try soon after as the impressive Lipscomb powered his way to the line from 22-metres out with Spires converting after good work from Craig Martin and AJ Lewis.

And the home side scored a third try when Lipscomb charged down a goalline dropout before Beddard crossed the whitewash after a series of tap-and-go penalties.

However, the attempted conversion agonisingly drifted the wrong side of the posts to leave the Kingfishers two points short of completing a memorable comeback.

Redditch are next in action away at Birmingham Exiles on Saturday, September 23 with kick-off at 2.30pm at Old Damson Lane.
