RUGBY UNION - Redditch victorious on the road at Keresley

REDDITCH RFC extended their winning run to three matches with a seven-try 43-21 success away at Keresley despite playing most of the game with 14-men.

Owen Binns and Leo Fanthome both crossed for two tries with captain Matt Allen, Aaron Atkinson and Mike Allen dotting down Redditch’s other scores.

That came despite the visitors Jack Bacciocchi receiving a red card for throwing a retaliatory punch just before half-time.

Victory means Redditch sit third in the Midlands 5 West (South) table – five points behind joint leaders Birmingham & Solihull and Cannock.

Skipper Matt Allen was first to cross for Redditch when some swift passes from left and right created space through the middle for him to score.

The hosts responded almost straight from the restart after building some momentum before touching down in the corner from close range to level the scores.

However, four quickfire tries took the game away from Keresley and all but secured the points for Redditch before half-time.

Binns restored Redditch’s lead with his first try of the afternoon – to maintain his record of scoring in every league game so far this season.

Then, from the kick off, Matt Allen made ground before releasing Fanthome who danced around the Keresley defence before running 60 metres to the try line.

Fanthome repeated the feat minutes later as he cut through the defensive line to run in unopposed for his second try of the match.

And after Keresley had tried to kill Redditch’s momentum Clarke Parker burst through a maul and made 30 metres before the ball was worked out wide to Atkinson to dive over.

Redditch were then reduced to 14-men when Bacciocchi was shown a red card after he was seen to throw a retaliatory punch by the referee.

Keresley made the most of their numerical advantage when they drove to the line and scored their second try of the match just before half-time – leaving Redditch with a 31-14 lead at the break.

Despite their man advantage, Keresley were unable to make it count in the second period against a stout Redditch defence.

Redditch soaked up the pressure before Fanthome skipped past his markers and passed to Binns who crossed for a simple try underneath the posts.

The home side eventually found a way through when the Redditch pack was penalised at a scrum on the line – conceding a penalty try in the process.

And even when Redditch were left with 13 players on the field after Fanthome was yellow carded for a high tackle – Keresley were still unable to reduce the deficit.

It was left to Mike Allen to round off the scoring when he crashed over in the corner to complete an impressive victory with Will Heath converting four tries.

Redditch are next in action away at fourth-placed Stourport on Saturday, November 6 at Walshes Meadow.
