Single-shot defeats frustrate White Hart

Redditch Editorial 25th Jun, 2019   0

WHITE Hart suffered two single-shot defeats in a mixed week of fortunes for the Redditch club.

In the Heart of England Over 60s League Division One, Hart’s A team lost 110-109 to unbeaten leaders Moseley A in a thriller on the Headless Cross green. Graham Arnott (21-17) and Ken Brown (21-19) gave White Hart two wins in the first half, while Ian Humphreys (21-14) and captain Mike Estell (21-18) made it four points for the hosts.

However, the match was still in the balance and, although Norman Batchelor fought back well in his tie, it was not quite enough as the visitors stayed top of the table after taking 12 points to White Hart’s four.

This was Hart’s second match in four days after they comfortably defeated visitors Black Horse A 123-79. Ray Richards (21-2) and Ian Humphreys (21-4) virtually put the match out of the visitors’ reach before Kirk Wright just lost out 21-20 to Ray Deakin.

Ken Brown (21-13) and captain Mike Estell (21-18) also produced winning cards, while Graham Arnott lost a close encounter with Peter Dunbavin 21-19.

White Hart B went down 126-80 at Hall Green A in Division Two and failed to provide a single winner. Neil Laxton and Sheila Humphreys (both 18) came closest to gaining points for the Redditch team.

In HOE Thursday League Division Two, White Hart A were narrow 140-134 winners at home to Stoke Prior A. Kirk Wright (21-13), Ray Richards (21-19) and Ken Brown (21-7) helped to give Hart an 11-shot lead at the halfway stage but the visitors fought back in the second half with two winning cards before Tim Hollingshead (21-12) and Mick Perrins with a firing last bowl (21-20) secured the win for the hosts and 15 points.

White Hart B were easily beaten 152-100 in Division Three at Baldwin B where only Mike Hancock (21-19) and Dave Kings (21-7) gave them a two-point consolation.

In the HOE Consolation Cup, White Hart B again were just beaten by a single shot despite producing five winning cards from the six ties. Hockley Heath B enjoyed a 30-shot lead in the handicap format of the competition but Tom Hawkes (21-15), Neil Laxton (21-13) and Sheila Humphreys (21-15) reduced the deficit to ten shots at halfway before Gill Croft (21-7) and Mick Perrins (21-9) put the Redditch team in the driving seat, only for a poor 21-4 card to knock them out of the cup by the smallest of margins.

In Warks/Worcs League Division Four, White Hart struggled to make an impression at Hamstead Social and they came away with just two points through wins from Graham Arnott (21-13) and Martyn Higgins (21-14), although Katy Lang was only beaten by one shot.

In Yardley Wood & District Superleague Division Two, White Hart A were disappointingly defeated at bottom of the table Kings Norton Ex-Service. Tim Hollingshead (21-4), Ray Richards (21-18) and captain Kirk Wright (21-11) gave the visitors three points, while both Gill Croft and Dave Kings were both just beaten 21-20. Two defeats to single figures were their undoing, however, with the final score standing at 138-132.

White Hart B were also narrow losers at home to Woodbourne A in Division Four. Phil Hemming (21-16), Denis Turner (21-7), Ged Dooner (21-16) and Paul Thompson (21-17) gave them four points from the match to keep them in the promotion race.

In Northfield & District Sunday League Division Two, White Hart A hammered visitors Rubery Sheldon A 163-89. Their seven wins came from Paul Matthews (21-7), Ian Humphreys (21-5), Katy Lang (21-6), Graham Arnott (21-4), Mike Estell (21-19), Tim Hollingshead (21-16) and captain Mick Perrins (21-11), putting the team in third place, just one point away from a promotion position.

White Hart B were narrow 144-137 losers at Black Horse A in Division Three as Sue Sugden (21-2), Norman Batchelor (21-19), Mike Hancock (21-19) and captain Dave Edwards (21-20) gave them four points.

In SW Birmingham & District League, White Hart B gained an unexpected but deserved win at Weoley Castle WMC after losing at home to the same team the previous day.

Richard Coyne (21-16) and Tom Hawkes (21-9) were their first half winners, while John Meredith lost 21-20. Two further winning cards from Brian Chatterley (21-19) and captain Sue Sugdan (21-18) meant the final score was 122-104 in Hart’s favour and they occupy second place in Division Three.

Beginner/novice sessions are held on Monday evenings at the White Hart green for members and non-members of all ages. To book places, contact Kirk Wright on 07707 756641.
