MAC Eaton won the Redditch Skittles League singles competition with a dominant performance after overcoming a scare in qualifying.

Eaton, who plays for Nomads, beat Tim Jones, Rob Quartly and also Dennis Compton in the final to lift the trophy.

Some 40 players entered the competition and split into four preliminary groups.

A number of former champions failed to progress out of the group stages. And eight-year-old Zach Clewlow (Engineers) also took part in the competition.

Moving into the quarter-finals, in Group A, Angela Guest (C and G Show) and Jumbo Jet Set pair Dave Marriott and Len Quartly all qualified for the semi-finals.

And in Group B, a 14 stack from Glyn Morley (Lodge Farmers) saw him top the group ahead of eventual winner Eaton and also Dave Orton (C and G Show).

In Group C, Phil Jones (Nomads) and Bert Clewlow (Engineers) made it out of a low-scoring group along with Compton (Jumbo Jet Set).

And in Group D, Maurice Wroe eased into the semi-finals thanks to a 15 stack along with R Quartly (Jumbo Jet Set) and also Tim Jones (Lodge Farmers).

The two semi-final groups were made up of six players each with the top two from each group progressing to the final.

Eaton bowled well again to book his place in the final alongside Compton with both players scoring 42 pins.

And Jones and Quartly completed the line-up for the final after also scoring 43 pins apiece in their group.

Eaton took command of the final after the second leg at which time just three pins separated him from Compton in fourth.

A 14-pin stack allowed Eaton to open up an eight-pin lead with two legs left to play.

And Eaton matched his closest challengers in the remaining legs to clinch the title.

Eaton finished on 40 pins with R Quartly runner-up on 33 pins, Compton on 31 pins and Jones on 28 pins.
