Solitary point is tough on Reds

REDDITCH United can count themselves unfortunate to have taken just one point from the opening week of the Southern Premier Central campaign.

Ian King’s side contested a hard-fought goalless draw at home to Banbury United on Saturday before falling to a 3-1 defeat at Rushall Olympic on Tuesday as the hosts began life on their new 3G pitch.

The result was tough on the visitors who played their part in an entertaining game against a much-improved Rushall.

The Pics went 1-0 up on 15 minutes when Jonathan Letford fired home from close range after Levi Rowley’s effort had been cleared off the line.

However, Rushall, who had former Reds talent Shaquille Leachman-Whittingham in their side, were pegged back midway through the first half when Ryan Moore struck a fierce shot past Adam Whitehouse in the Pics goal.

Rowley went close twice before the break and Danny Waldron fired wildly over the bar shortly into the second period.

However, it was Redditch who came closest to taking the lead when Dan Sweeney cleverly flicked the ball beyond keeper Whitehouse towards an empty net but Chekaine Steele raced back to clear.

Rushall took full advantage of their escape to take a 2-1 lead on 67 minutes when Waldron pounced from close range but there was plenty more drama to come.

With just over ten minutes remaining Callum Coyle made a jinking run into the home box and was upended, but Whitehouse made a fine diving stop to keep out Coyle’s penalty.

Five minutes later the home side were awarded a penalty of their own when substitute Ben Lund was brought down by Max Beardmore in the Reds goal and Sam Whittall made no mistake from 12 yards.

The Reds will seek their first win of the season on Saturday when they visit Needham Market, who also have one point from two games.
