TENNIS - Glasspool exits Wimbledon after round of 16 epic

REDDITCH’s Lloyd Glasspool and Finland’s Harri Heliövaara were beaten in a five-set epic by the defending champions in the round of 16 of the Men’s Doubles at SW19.

Glasspool and Finnish partner Heliövaara produced a stirring comeback from two sets down to set up a decider on Court 12 only to fall short in their attempts to reach the quarter-finals.

Croatian second seeds Mate Pavić and Nikola Mektić eventually prevailed 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 in an absorbing contest that lasted more than three hours.

The pair came through a tough second round match against American William Blumberg and Norwegian Casper Ruud as they won 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in a back-and-forth contest.

That came after a convincing first round win against the French-Italian pairing of Hugo Gaston and Lorenzo Musetti as they triumphed 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets.
