LLOYD Glasspool saw the defence of his men’s double title at Wimbledon come to an end at the quarter-final stage.

Redditch’s Glasspool and playing partner Julian Cash suffered a straight sets 6-2, 7-6 defeat against sixth seeds Mate Pavic and Marcelo Arevalo.

The British pair entered this year’s Wimbledon men’s doubles seeded third as defending champions.

However, Glasspool and Cash could not match their memorable run at their home Grand Slam as they achieved last year.

Croatia’s Pavic and El Salvador’s Arevalo proved too strong for the Brits in a match which lasted an hour and 14 minutes on Court Two.

Glasspool and Cash faced adversity from the outset as the pair recovered from love-40 down in the opening game to hold on Cash’s serve.

However, Pavic and Arevalo eventually claimed a double break before the former held serve comfortably to take the first set.

The second set went to a tie break as Pavic and Arevalo won 91 per cent of points on their first serve throughout the match.

And the duo also did not give up a single break point in the second set after Glasspool and Cash failed to convert two break-point opportunities in the first set.

A double fault from Cash allowed Pavic and Arevalo to pounce and win the tie-break 7-2 to knock out the defending champions.

Despite the defeat, Glasspool and Cash’s run to the quarter-finals marks the duo’s best run at a Grand Slam this year following early exits at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros.
