White Hart given boost in relegation scrap

Redditch Editorial 9th Aug, 2019   0

WHITE Hart’s A team took 15 vital points from a thrilling home victory over King George VI A to ease their relegation fears in Heart Of England League Division Two.

Heavy rainfall before the game last Thursday meant the team had to spend time clearing water from the green to make it playable during their pre-match roll-up time and the visitors won two of the first-half ties.

Wins for Sheila Humphreys (21-17) and Brian Chatterley (21-16) reduced the hosts deficit to 11 shots at halfway, and more winning cards from Ray Richards 21-10 and captain Ian Humphreys kept the match in the balance before a 21-19 win for Mick Perrins in the final game on the green gave Hart a 145-143 victory.

Defeat would have put them at the bottom of the table but they are now three points clear of the relegation zone with four matches left to play.

White Hart B predictably struggled on the Ye Olde Knowle B’s tough green and lost to them 109-166 in Division Three. Their only winner was Dave Edwards (21-19) and they are now eight points adrift at the bottom of the league.

In the H.O.E Over 60s Division One White Hart A fell to a heavy 65-125 defeat at Wythall A. Kirk Wright was their only winner, narrowly beating Pam Birch 21-20.

In Division Two White Hart B were also defeated by Baldwin 94-110 despite having three winners – Gill Croft (21-14), Tom Hawkes (21-20) and Mick Perrins (21-14).

In the Northfield & District Sunday League Division Two, White Hart A kept their promotion hopes alive after a fine 150-106 win at Ye Olde Knowle.

All four of their first half bowlers produced winning cards – Graham Arnott (21-14), Paul Matthews (21-19), Ian Humphreys (21-1( and Martyn Higgins (21-11) and, though the hosts fought back with 2 winners, Ray Richards (21-13) and Mike Estell (21-6) put the match beyond doubt in Hart’s favour. They are currently in third place, three points behind second-placed Weoley Castle WMC A.

White Hart B defeated WCWMC B 146-120 in Division Three with four winning cards from Sue Sugden (21-14), Norman Batchelor (21-12), Mike Hancock (21-2) and Phil Hemming (21-8).

In the Yardley Wood & District League Division Two, White Hart A were surprisingly beaten at home by Bournville Sports A 128-139. Martyn Higgins (21-8) and Ray Richards (21-15) were their only two first half winners and though Graham Arnott (21-17) and captain Kirk Wright (21-15) gave them two more points it was not enough.

White Hart B ended their campaign in fourth place in Division Four after a narrow 129-133 defeat at Bournville B, despite wins from Denis Turner (21-9), Paul Thompson (21-8) and Phil Hemming (21-11).

In the Saturday Warwick & Worcs League Divison Four, White Hart lost 271-179 at Rubery Sheldon JC but picked up five points. Trina Higgins (21-18), Katy Lang (21-19), Ray Richards (21-5), Mike Hancock (21-15) and Martyn Higgins (21-13) produced winning cards while Graham Arnott was only beaten by a single shot.
