FOOTBALL - Church end winless run with victory at Hednesford

Redditch Editorial 31st Jan, 2023   0

ALVECHURCH secured their first win since the turn of the year with a 2-1 victory at Hednesford Town to end their five-game winless run.

Church took the lead through Jed Abbey’s strike before Tyrell Hamilton scored the winner after Todd Parker had equalised for Hednesford with all three goals coming in the first half at Keys Park.

The result means Alvechurch remain 21st in the Southern League Premier Central table, just one point behind Kings Langley with seven games in hand.

A frantic first half ensued as Church took the lead on 17 minutes when Abbey coolly dispatched Hamilton’s low ball across the box after the striker beat the offside trap.

However, the home side equalised on 28 minutes when Parker fired a loose ball into the roof of the net from 15-yards out after Church failed to clear their lines at a corner.

Ian Long’s side regained the lead just seven minutes later when Abbey’s clever free-kick around the wall set Hamilton through on goal as the striker finished well into the bottom right corner past Town goalkeeper Ronnie Hollingshead.

Tempers boiled over in the second half as a melee ensued in the Alvechurch box with the referee eventually showing a yellow card to Church’s Ash Carter and Hednesford’s Riley Cole O’Sullivan after consulting with his assistant.

And there was almost another flashpoint when Church goalkeeper Dan Jezeph put the ball out of play for Hamilton to receive treatment only for the home side to decline to give the ball back and shoot inches wide from the next play.

Hednesford had the ball in the net on 79 minutes only for their celebrations to be cut short as the referee spotted a handball in the build up and duly ruled the goal out

The visitors almost wrapped up the points on 81 minutes when Abbey’s free-kick nearly took Hollingshead by surprise as the Town keeper just sorted his feet out in time to make a crucial save on the goalline.

Alvechurch are next in action away at Needham Market TONIGHT (Tuesday, January 31) with kick-off at 7.45pm at Bloomfields.
