Kings 2nd impress

KINGS NORTON 2nds began their Worcestershire & Herefordshire Merit Table season with a 19-7 victory at Bournville 3rds.

This match played in Harborne pitted Kings against a lively Bournville outfit but, playing up the slope and against a strong downfield wind, Kings’ plucky players defended their territory well in the first half and conceded just one converted try after eight minutes.

The defence fought magnificently against the home side and thwarted any further first half scoring while building a number of attacks and, after a great run through the Chocolate Men’s defence by Pete Crompton, the ball was recycled along the support and finished off in fine style in the left-hand corner by winger Paul Arnold, whose one-handed lunge saw him touch down under pressure.

The conversion attempt flew narrowly wide and the hosts led 7-5 at the break.

Kings began the second period as they left off, taking the game to their hosts and spending long spells deep in their 22m area without finding the final touch.

Bournville eventually responded and pressurised Kings deep in their half but, following a long range downfield clearance, Kings again took the initiative and a number of forward drives led to an opportunity for Crompton to cross for a try between the posts to which Paul Crocker added the extras.

Then, with just five minutes left, Sam Back finished another forward drive with a try converted by Crocker.

Coach Chris Hands was full of praise for his squad, which contained a number of newcomers who slotted in well.

The Kings first team return to Midlands Four West (South) action on Saturday (3pm) at home to Coventry side Keresley at Hopwood Park, Ash Lane.

The club expect to field their second XV, also at home against local opposition.
