REDDITCH RFC geared up for their final two league games of the season with a 38-21 friendly win against Five Ways Old Edwardians.

The Kingfishers took to the pitch for the first time in almost a month with the club keen to end a disappointing campaign on a high note.

After a cagey start, Joe Morgan and Jack Mertens frequently troubled the Five Ways back line before Stu Brookes scored the game’s first try.

Five Ways responded soon after only for Morgan to dot down for Redditch after good work from Mertens.

The tries continued to flow as Five Ways responded with a second try to take a narrow two-point lead.

The Kingfishers reclaimed the lead when Harry Rutter rounded off a flowing move out wide before Sid Allen powered over for Redditch’s fourth try.

And Will Spires kicked two conversions to send Redditch into the break with a 10-point advantage.

Spires scored and converted his own try to extend Redditch’s lead before Five Ways took advantage of a series of penalties to reduce the deficit.

However, the Kingfishers sealed victory when Morgan broke the line and Spires chipped the ball ahead to Mertens who dove on the bouncing ball to score.

Redditch are next in action against Stourport on Saturday, April 18 with kick-off at 3pm at Bromsgrove Road.
